Tanjungpura University English Teaching Materials:
A Model Development for Undergraduate Academic English Courses

One of the study success keys in Indonesian universities is English proficiency. It is the main foreign language thought in undergraduate degree all over the country. In Tanjungpura University (Untan), a state university located in Pontianak – Borneo – Indonesia, English has been one of the primary requirements to every student to complete their study. Before leaving the university, every student should must take its standardized English test and obtain score at least 450. Its scoring system has been designed equal to TOEFL scoring system so it will be easy for any university in the world to understand the score issued by the university. Obtaining 450 is not an easy job for Indonesian students, particularly those who study in the university. Such a problem has also been difficult to solve for the lecturers who are assigned to facilitate English learning at the university. One of the problems is the availability of the teaching materials. So far, the lecturers have been using global teaching materials available in book stores and internet. In some cases, they have benefited from those materials. However, more suitable teaching materials are demanded by them to increase the quality of the learning experienced by the students.
That is why, quality teaching materials to enhance the quality of Untan students’ English learning experiences. This research is conducted to produce a model the teaching materials that best suited the demand. There two questions to resolve before producing the model to develop the teaching materials: (1) what are the description of demand to materials and (2) what cognitive, affective, psychomotoric, and creative competence should the students acquire after completing the required courses. A preliminary development procedure model is very important to start the research. The model is written by the researcher from library study. It starts from a need assessment and follows through formulating objectives, defining contexts, designing the materials, calibrating the materials, trying out the materials through small-scale testing and classroom testing, analyzing the test results, focused group discussion with the students, focused group discussion with the lecturers and some other faculty members, revision, back to trying out, and the second try-out, the second focused group discussion with the students, and the second focused group discussion with the lectures and some other faculty members. The last step of the procedure is obtaining input from a larger group through seminar.It is believed in this research that language intrapersonal functions, interpersonal functions, ideational functions, and cultural functions. It is also believed that learning can take place when a learner experiences something. Hence, teaching is understood as facilitating the learner to experience using a language. Teaching materials are very important. They are used to motivate the learners experiencing using English and to give linguistic and non-linguistic inputs to the learners. For those reasons, teaching materials development must put into consideration various aspects related to the nature of language, the nature of language teaching, culture, and the context where the learning experiences take place. Before the students are exposed to the teaching material, the lecturers must make sure that the teaching materials suit the students, the teaching objectives, and the context of the teaching and learning process.

Kemajuan

Saat ini proposal desain disertasi sedang dikonsultasikan. Upaya penggalangan dana pendukung penelitian juga sedang dijalankan. Pendalaman teori dan metodologi direncanakan dilaksanakan di Leeds Metropolitan University - UK, dengan bantuan dana Ditjen dikti melalui program sanwich (akan segera didaftarkan). Semoga berhasil.
